We are looking into portraying mental health in our short film. The film Silverlinings main character has bi-polar and I feel it is a very good representation of the disorder which uses many different techniques.
- Talks a lot about his feelings, when he feels inspired or down, he is very expressive.
- Shaky or sudden camera movement when mood changes.
- A lot of close ups on face to show emotion and make the audience relate to the character
- low camera angles when he is angry to portray his dominance and how intimidating he is.
- When ranting he is pacing to show his anger
- He is violent physically, such as throwing a book out a window and throw magazines and a shelf around.
- when he becomes angry the camera angle is low to represent that he is becoming intimidating
This is an ad about anxiety I think the use of voice overs is very clever to portray how she feels, and I think maybe the idea of her feeling like she can't speak could be effective.
- This ad has cleverly linked the voice over to the visuals by having a CU of the character.
- Her non-verbal language and facial expressions enhance what she is saying due to her look of worry and her agitated actions such as flickering her eyes around and looking down
- The camera moving around her and going in and out of focus is very uncomforting, this makes the audience understand more about how the character is feeling, putting the audience in the characters uncomfortable state.
- The echoing and loud voice over is very powerful and how fast her thoughts change is a great way to highlight how anxious she is feeling
- The everyday location makes it feel very real and will allow the audience to relate to this ordinary character
- This sequence is clever as it only includes one character in a single ordinary location but the use of a variety of close camera angles and distances with an added voice over makes it very moving.
- I feel like this clip is very real and raw, the simplicity creates a huge impact.
- Also represents how their struggle doesn't define them. They state who they are at the start, a mother, student etc their other qualities such as being funny and smart. It isn't their struggle which defines their life or how they are any different from one another.
- I also think their closing quote is very moving 'Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't real'. Using these impactful quotes is something that I feel will be essential in our short film to evoke emotion from the audience.
- There eye contact with the camera breaks the fourth wall and will make the audience feel like they are talking to them. This will allow the audience to connect with the characters, and therefore what the characters are saying will mean more.
- I think the subtle background music is very effective it doesn't over power the talking at al but it builds tension and adds to the emotion of the sequence.
- The costume they are wearing is very simple and the background is plain to ensure that all focus is on what the characters are saying.
Good contextual research here and some useful insights into film techniques and storytelling - add more detail if you can when analysing how films convey the story through visuals and sounds.
