Alex McDowell :EL342: Moving Image
I am Alex McDowell and I am currently attending the University of Kent. I have been set a brief to create a short film between 2-3 minutes in length. I am creating this along with my group, Izzy Cooper(ic230), Emma O'brien (EO246), Lizzie Murphy(em505) and Lucy Abbot(laa29). We are group 5 and are participating in EL342 Moving Image.

2nd April: The finished film
I am very pleased with our finished result. I feel that the ending when Jenny smiles shows that just because someone has a mental illness doesn't mean they are any different. I think our message is very powerful and the glass is a great metaphorical way to represent this.
POST-PRODUCTION: 1st April:Editing
On the 1st April I finished the editing of our film.
- I ensured all parts of the editing were in sync and added the diegetic sound to the clips, such as the tap running, doors closing.
- I added the voiceovers we had recorded in the sound booth.
- I added key frames to the sound through out the film, ensuring that the diegetic and non-diegetic sound faded in and out nicely. Also ensure that the background music was never overpowering to the voiceovers.
- We decided to not put any quotes on screen, and chose to just use the voiceover at the end instead through out the whole piece as this was stronger and we didn't want our film to have too much going on that all he information couldn't be taken in

PRODUCTION: 1st April:Sound recording
Voiceover
- On the 1st April we decided to re record sound in the sound booth.
- We recorded using the microphone and using the sound proof room which worked perfectly.
- It created a voiceover with zero background noise.

POST-PRODUCTION: 31stMarch:Editing
Background Music
- We had initially been using a soundtrack called "Tension" which we found on the website:http://www.audionetwork.com/
- owever we felt it sounded to dark so I went back onto the website and found something more appropriate. I chose a track called "Encounters" it uses a somber piano and has subtle glitch sounds. It is calm and fits perfectly with our piece.
- This made the voiceover sound stronger as the background music wasn't so overpowering as before
- I also found another track called "Palpitations" which we are going to use when the character Jenny is outside. As she has social anxiety this will be a perfect way to portray that she is feeling uncomfortable and panicked.
The Title
- We were going to have the title on a black background however we felt that it looked visually very effective to put it over the montage sequence
- Also it meant that the title could stay on screen for a long time without wasting time and making the message of our film more clear.
- We chose the font to be simple and clear so that the audience would take it in.
Statistics
- Initially we wanted to include statistics appearing on screen however we decided that it would distract the viewers from focusing on the visuals. As we felt visually it was so strong we didn't want to detract from this.
Voiceovers
- We were going to have voiceovers through out the whole film.
- However we felt this was too much and using a voiceover for only part of the film would create more impact.
- So we decided to have a voiceover only at the ending of the sequence
- Also when the final shot of the glass appears we are going to have the voice over of Jessica say "Most people assume we are Half Empty but we are Half Full to make the message of our film clear.
- We also decided that the voiceovers are very good but there was a hazy background noise on our recording.
- To overcome this we plan to record in the sound proof booth
PRODUCTION: 31st March:Filming
On the 31st March we began filming the ending sequence outside.
Firstly we filmed Sophie walking around after she had just passed Jenny, we did many tight close ups to portray that the voice over was being said from her perspective. This way it would be easy for the audience to understand
Firstly we filmed Sophie walking around after she had just passed Jenny, we did many tight close ups to portray that the voice over was being said from her perspective. This way it would be easy for the audience to understand
We filmed Jessica smiling towards Sophie to highlight there friendship. We also did the filming in the same style by using the same close shots but with Jessica
I was very pleased with the outcome of how these shots looked.
Issues we faced
- We needed the weather to be cloudy so that the sequence filmed of Jenny would flow visually into the sequence of Sophie outside, at some points it was and some it was sunny.
- We had to do a lot of Close Ups while the characters were walking and it was therefore difficult to keep them in focus.
- The public sometimes got in the way when filming.
How we overcame them
- To over come this we made sure to either film in shaded areas so you couldn't tell or just waited for the sun to go in.
- We had to keep retaking shots to ensure that they were all in focus throughout the whole clip.
- We tried to film when it wasn't busy or retook if anyone was in the way of the shot.

PRODUCTION: 24th March:Progress update
Points made in video:
- After putting the clips of the characters in the seminar room in we felt that the ending of our film didn't work with the start.
- Visually the start was very strong and brilliant lighting and a variety camera angles, however the seminar room was dull and drained the colour from the actresses.
- We are going to re film the ending outside.
- We will follow on from where the character Jenny is outside with anxiety and then make Sophie walk past and Jessica then walk past Sophie so the sequence flows.
- We must make sure that when re filming the whether is similar to the day we filmed Jenny outside.
- We also felt that the music we have chosen to use for our piece is too sinister, and almost feels like it should be in a horror film so we need to reconsider and look on more websites.
I drew out a storyboard for the shots we want to film outside:
The last few shots where Jessica and Sophie are smiling at each other are essential to portray the friendship they have found in each other.

PRODUCTION: 23rd March: Filming
On the 23rd March we filmed in a seminar room the characters entering and sitting down. They then each individually spoke to the camera.

We also recorded the voiceover for while the characters are getting ready.
Issues we faced:
- Once again there was a lot of noise around the seminar room
- We didn't have the best lighting as it was indoors and it was artificial as there were practically no windows in the seminar room we chose.
how we overcame them:
- We had to be patient and wait until there wasn't any noise
- we used some of our own lighting but we didn't really feel it looked that good. We resolve this later on.
