PRE-PRODUCTION: 5th February: Research

  • I think that the storyline for this short film is very effective. At the start there is a character who telling her she looks terrible, you then see a reveal shot that the character isn't a real person but the voice in her head. As this shot happens a piercing high sound is used which evokes an unearving feeling in the audience. Using subtle sounds is very effective.

The framing and angle of this shot his very clever, it is an over the shoulder shot of the main character staring at her body in the mirror. It allows the audience to see her expression clearly. I definitely think we should recreate a frame similar to this.

Another aspect of this short film I thought was effective was the colouring, it is de-saturated, making the character look very down and weary, which reflects how she is feeling due to her eating disorder. It is a visual way to reflect her inner feelings throughout the film.

I like the use of back lighting through the window it looks very atmospheric and moody. It creates a beautiful silhouette of the main character.

The short film uses a lot of jump cuts when the character become frustrated. This is a clever way to connote chaos and frustration .

This shot is very unique and interesting. I like the use of an  ECU and the high angle, I think we should experiment with many different angles to create an enticing visual sequence. It is a good way to capture an audiences attention.

Using a three wa split screen looks ver effective and gives the audience a lot of information quickly.  This will be a good way to compare and contrast the three characters in our film.

This shot of the girl looking out the window created a sense of longing and loneliness, this would be a good shot to recreate in our film.

The use of an overlay looks very professional and allows us to have different perspecitves of one character on screen at one time. This makes it feel very invasive and personal which would be perfect for our film.

This over the shoulder shot looks very interesting and would be an effective angle to film our character with an eating disorder looking at modelling magazines.

The title sequence to Shutter Island inspired me as to how our statictics should appear on screen.
They try to make the text appear in a blank area so that it is clearly read
This means when we plan certain shots we should leave space for our statistics to appear on screen

  1. Some good analysis and exploration of framing and use of light here and how you might you use this in your own film.
